Tip of the iceberg – exhibition of the best of the young

Ung Svensk Form is the Swedish title of what is named an arena for young design with the aim of helping new, innovative designers reach new audiences.
The applicants are encouraged to work and explore without any commercial considerations. The present exhibition received 400 submissions but shows the design of a qualified group of 20 young designers.
The Ung Svensk Form exhibition tours in both Sweden and abroad, and thus helps the young designers to enter into a dialogue also with manufacturers.
According to IKEA Design Manager, Marcus Engman, the 2016 finalists “show courage and a desire to swim against the current”. Marcus Engman is a jury member and also praises the design talents for their ability to do something different but still remain accessible.
As evident from photos, the designers DalieLau with his Carousel Stool and Samuel Kuhfuss with Fundamental Essential, both managed to play and remain fairly close to the market and maybe even large-scale production.
Designer Samuel Kuhfuss reflects on being a part of Ung Svensk Form: “Apart from being a part of the exhibition, the project has also given me the opportunity to network with the other nominees. I think that these relationships will be most valuable in the long run. I met a lot of people, whom I would like to work with in the future.”
Samuel continues: “Fundamental Essential was only one of the many ideas I had both in spatial solutions and for products. I hope to make a second edition in a different context.” When asked what the benefits of Ung Svensk Form is, Samuel rounds off: “It is all still new for me, so at the moment I use both positive and negative feedback as a valuable source for reflection on my work in a public space, and learn how my ideas work on people around me.”
In addition to the exhibition, the project grants two residential five months’ work-scholarships and three grants. The arena was initiated by Svensk Form and Form/Design Center in 1998.
