Just how much can you ask from a table?

Karl Andersson goes for first class functionality

It is often said that Nordic design excels in its balance between aesthetics and functionality. Quite often it is taken for granted and therefore hardly noticed. But every now and again, a product meets the market with true refinement in functionality. Such is the table Press from Karl Andersson & Sons in Huskvarna, Sweden.

Sara Wadskog, who is one of the 3 fourth-generation owners of Karl Andersson tells the story of the multi-functional table: “Press is the result of an endeavour to construct a folding table made entirely out of wood. The challenge was to make a light and still very stable construction; easy to fold up and durable.
After 3-4 years of experimentation, the designers, Lars Pettersson & Morgan Rudberg, succeeded in developing a table doing all that, while offering a number additional features and technical possibilities. Besides, the folding construction allows seating at the ends of the table.”

Karl Andersson & Sons have produced furniture since 1898, and offer an broad range of furniture design from designers in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Japan, and Argentina. But the identity of the design is still Karl Andersson. Sara Wadskog explains: “When we select designers for cooperation it is central that they demonstrate something special. A twist. It may be something particular in functionality, a detail or - a sense of humour.”

Karl Andersson have received a number of design awards also for their tables Newton by Dan Sunaga and Staffan Holm, and Thinner by Tobias Berneth.
