Designing the details for play and delivery

The Norwegian designer duo Gridy, by Lars Olav Dybdal and Wilhelm Grieg Teisner, keep a high level of activity on fairs and exhibitions while maintaining a quality which has earned them a number of awards and enabled them to land cooperation with some well-established brands.

A curious peek behind the scenes of activity reveals the latest news at Gridy.

- At the moment we are working with several different producers on a range of different products from furniture to more industrial design projects. Most of the projects are at an early stage, so there is a lot of work still to be done, but it is an exciting process. We are very privileged to be part of a couple new start- ups, and at the same time we work with established brands. Both in Norway and abroad, says Lars Olav Dybdal.

- One of our latest mass-produced products is the “Play” coat rack for Normann Copenhagen. Our design for that was inspired by the tiny players of a football game. We wanted to create a coat rack with charm and a playful expression, and we wanted it to be a functional, decorative and inviting element on the wall. The candy colors were chosen in collaboration with Normann Copenhagen to underline the element of play in the company of a grey tone and oak.

The commercial balance

When asked about the business of design, the balance between cooperation with start-ups and the cooperation with established brands, Lars Olav explains:

- We usually work with established brands. Lately we have been invited also to work with some start-ups. There is of course a certain risk when working with start-ups, but it is also both fun and exciting to be part of something new. We shall have to see, how it turns out.

Wilhelm rounds off:

- When talking about balance, we also consider our own design DNA in our many different collaborations. We always try to maintain our DNA when designing new projects. But of course, we also have to meet our clients’ demands. But we believe that clients want to work with us because of our design DNA. Our main focus is always to design a good product that the customer is happy with.
