Finish by hand

Carl Hansen & Son is growing internationally, but in the factory in Denmark, every piece is still finished by hand

Things are moving fast at Carl Hansen & Son. The company manufactures classic furniture by Hans Wegner, Kaare Klint and other great architects.

CEO and owner Knud Erik Hansen has put full steam on the sales offices all around the world, and that has paid off. Last year, sales grew by a staggering 36 percent, and even more cabinet makers. In a decade, the number of employees has grown from 17 to 280.

Recently, Carl Hansen & Son has started producing furniture by Wegner that has never previously been manufactured. Among others the dining room chair CH26 from 1950, which has just recently gone into production.

While some work is done by machine, the finish is always done by hand, chief of production Line Grothkær says.

- Quality and solid craftsmanship is at the core of our values, she argues.

- We are selling a high quality product at a reasonable price. That requires efficiency in production, a hight volume and representation all over the world, says Knud Erik Hansen, who's opened sales offices in several countries.

The big hit in sales was previously the Y-chair, but now, sales are much more evenly distributed over several of the company's furniture.
