Pil Bredahl on her new Rosendahl carafe

When the designer Pil Bredahl was assigned the task of designing the successor to the Grand Cru carafe at Rosendahl, she was well aware of the task at hand. Grand Cru is known by everybody, and may well be one most widely-owned design products in the Nordics.

At the Rosendahl launch event for its new collection of designs, Pil Bredahl explained her considerations as she initiated her design of the Grand Cru successor to Nordic Design News. “I wanted to design a product clearly within the Rosendahl framework, but also a carafe that was complete on its own. For me the functionality and the feel of the product are important. The balance of the carafe when you pour, the secure grip at the silicone band when the carafe is wet, and the tight closure of the soft silicone lid. These are all elements that I worked with down to the last detail.”

Pil Bredahl continues: “Naturally, the shape and the aesthetic presentation of the carafe is also very important. The many frills at the bottom of the carafe may remind you of pleats or knitted cuffs and as such they have an inherent reference to fabric. They also add to the character of the product, and I find that essential. Even though our everyday products need have perfect functionality, their design must also elevate them from the anonymous crowd.”

The elegant carafe may be accompanied by glasses in similar design. No one wants to be alone. Not even when appointed as the successor of an icon.
