94-year-old gets design breakthrough in wallpaper

Sandberg's collection Signatur is a design treasure of beauty, rhythm and humor

Four female artists and designers, Dagmar Lodén, Ylva Källström-Eklund, Joy Zandén and Lillo Wikstrand have given their patterns and drawings to a collection that highlights the Scandinavian and the playful, modern and graphic. Ten unique patterns from a time when Scandinavian design was the best in the world - never previously released as wallpaper.

- To carefully re-interpret this treasurechest of patterns into current design has been a challenge, for our entire design team, which has filed us with warmth and joy, says Sandberg's creative director Hanna Wendelbo-Hansson.

The collection has a wide range, from the lovely Swedish summer meadow to the jazzy graphics typical of the fifties hipster-culture. Peace doves, shamrocks and children's book characters are gathered, all swarming in new colors and combinations, both subtle and powerful modernist. There is a resurgent world of patterns, found in archives, forgotten folders and attics.

The designers were active during the golden age, when Scandinavian design was the best in the world. Dagmar Lodén was a painter and pattern maker in Leksand, with many assignments for Jobs Handtryck. Ylva Källström-Eklund was a graphic designer and illustrator of children's books. Her vivid drawings in the songbook Våra Visor has influenced generations since the 1950s.

Joy Zandén was a decorator at operas and theaters, but also textile pattern maker with west coast scenery and gardens as her inspiraton. Lillo Wikstrands specialty was embroidery and she supplied the Swedish women's magazines with the popular "monthly pattern", created rugs, carpets and painted everything from churches to linoleum mats.

Only one of these four outstanding women are left alive. We now get to be there when Joy Zandén, at 94 years, finally gets her breakthrough as a designer.

The patterns are available in several colors printed on quality non-woven. All designs are manufactured in Sweden in a small-scale and artisanal production.
