Josef Frank

This week's featured designer wasn't born as a Swede but embodied the nordic region's design traditions

Josef Frank was born in Austria in 1885, and came to Sweden with his Swedish wife Anna in 1933. With influence from the so called Arts and Craft movement, he designed textiles and played an important role in the birth of Scandinavian modern design.

The threat from the rising Nazi menace was becoming too real, so upon an invitation from the founder of Svenskt Tenn, Estrid Ericson, he chose to leave his native country for good.

In Sweden he started his collaboration with Estrid Ericson. The mutually fruitful collaboration lasted until Josef Frank passed away in 1967.

Before he left Austria, Frank studied architecture at the Vienna Polytechnic Institute and later worked at an art school in Vienna before he co-created the interior design company, Haus & Garden in 1925.

He had many connections with the artistic movement Wiener Werkstatte. Attracted both to modern architecture and neo-classical pieces of furniture, Frank was influenced by a wide variety of styles including Chippendale, the Italian Renaissance, Asian and central European art.

His timless works cared for people's daily needs with it's humane kind of modernism. His works is leaving space for both historical influences and sentimentality.
