Nationalmuseum Design shows Eero Aarnio

During the Stockholm Design Week 2017 you can get a closer look at one of the greatest Finnish designers

During Stockholm Design Week 2017 Nationalmuseum Design opens an exhibition on the Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio. Aarnio is one of the internationally best-known designers in modern Finnish design history. In the 1960s, he attracted attention for his experimental design and futuristic chairs in reinforced plastic.

The exhibition presents one of the foremost design icons, who for more than seven decades extended the concept of what a piece of furniture can be and how it might look. Throughout his design-life Eero Aarnio experimented with shape and materials, technologies and manufacturing processes. As early as 1966 he presented the chair Thunderball/The Ball Chair at the Furniture Fair in Cologne, which instantly made him world famous.

Through five themes - Artifact, Mind, Time, Process and Production - Eero Aarnio's willful and playful approach, design processes and manufacturing is reflected. The exhibition shows both some of the most well-known furniture from the 1960s and 1970s as well as objects and furniture from the 2000s.

The exhibition is produced by the Design Museum in Helsinki, where it screened in the summer and autumn of 2016. Fully in the spirit of Eero Aarnio, the exhibition is experimental and playful, including podiums moving around the exhibition space while others are spinning slowly on their axis. Alongside the objects, even more rarely seen original sketches and materials from Aarnio's own desk are presented.
