Spectacular research facility wins Skåne Arkitekturpris 2016

Fojab Arkitekter and Snøhetta landscape architects receive award for MAX IV

Each year, Region Skåne awards Skåne Arkitekturpris to recognize and reward well-built environments in Skåne. In November, the lighting-research facility MAX IV won this year's prize. Thus Fojab Arkitekter and landscape architects Snøhetta with developer Fastighets AB ML4 are awarded the honor and the prize sum of 50 000 SEK.

MAX IV was one of three nominees at the event which was held as part of Kreativa Skåne at the Palladium in Malmö on November 11th. Other nominees were Bruksgården in Höganäs and the entrance to City Park in Helsingborg.

The prize was awarded to the MAX IV with the following reason from the jury:

"Skånes Arkitekturpris 2016 goes to the MAX IV laboratory in Lund for a uniquely shapes structure and an innovative landscape. The collaboration between the building's iconic shape and the stringent curvature of the landscape helps to bridge the offset between the large-scale highway landscape and the emerging field of research. Despite its severe form, monumental scale and industrial character, the architects have succeeded to create a surprising number of human qualities, interior as well as exterior. The jury believes that the facility has all the prerequisites to become an important landmark in the emerging research-region but more importantly, the design has created a productive place where our future conditions are formed by the interaction of people from all over the world. "

- Our goal with the MAX IV has been to create a well-planned and stimulating research environment, and to interpret and express the unique process in the building's exterior design. The research facilitys advanced high-tech content and function has been by far the main source of inspiration to the building's architecture and design, says Greger Dahlstrom, MAX IV's design responsible architect at Fojab Arkitekter.

- The mission was clear all the way from idea to finished project with a well-functioning organization and excellent cooperation of many talented and committed consultants and contractors, which have been instrumental in achieving the good results, says Janis Kursis, MAX IV's mission responsible architect from Fojab Arkitekter.

The project has been going on for six years, from 2010 to 2016, and has involved a total of 17 of the firm’s architects over the years.

- We are very proud and happy to be the winner of Skåne Arkitekturpris 2016. MAX IV has been one of our biggest projects in recent years. Many of us have worked on the project for several years and we can now proudly say that it has become a landmark in the region. The award is a further confirmation of the hard and dedicated work that our team put in to create the MAX IV, said Daniel North, CEO of Fojab Arkitekter.
