A blue system

The chair is not new. It was created in 1973, but the idea of it is brand new, and so is the textile. Verpan chose to upholster System 123 by Verner Panton (1926-1998) in different shades of blue. Not only because it was Panton's favorite color, but also because it suits the furniture in the finest manner.

The dinner- and lounge chair System 123 which Verpan chose to upholster with Kvadrat's Raf Simons collection of textiles is not only composed of one, but a symphony of shades of blue, interspersed with subtle tones of gold, sand and black.

A rational train of thought
The idea for the System 123 arose from the '70s rational thinking and largescale housing shortage. A chair should no longer be thought of as an isolated piece of furniture, but should be able to be put together and constitute a major piece, should the need arise. With System 123, Panton took a step further when it came to flexibility and comfort when he infused it with a frame with a swivel-mechanism.

According to Panton a chair had to be so comfortable that you could sit well in it both during and after dinner, as you automatically switch to a more relaxing seating position when the dinner is over. That he solved by splitting the back of the chair into two zones by giving it a tiny slit, which is used when the spine is straight, and when seeking rest.

System 123 consists of both dinner- and lounge chairs with or without buttons and with two different types of feet. A collection that not only should give a new and more comfortable sitting experience, but also pave the way towards a more flexible and practical interior.

It would prove that the System 123 should be one of Panton's greatest successes both as multi chair at home, at restauranta or at receptions. And today it is still selected qua its high comfort and sculptural form for places where the good experience is not to be disturbed or spoiled. Further, the chair is lined with a durable foam.
