Coco Chanel with a Nordic touch

&Tradition has been invited to furnish a signature room in Coco Chanel's private apartment in Paris

As a design brand, &Tradition has a strong legacy with classic icons from the past and is always seeking new future classics for the collection, as well as new collaborations within fashion, art and beyond. So it was natural to team up with MR Agency to decorate a room in Coco Chanel’s private apartment with furniture and accessories from &Tradition’s collection.

The Coco Chanel apartment is located in a private residential building occupied, in part, by the same family for hundreds of years. Family heirlooms and paintings decorate the entrance leading to the iconic classed stairway to this unique apartment filled with history and presence.

- Coco Chanel was not only the most famous person who lived in the apartment, she was the one who made the biggest impact, explains Founder of MR Agency Melissa Regan, in charge of the daily operations of the apartment.

- While Coco was living here, her friend and lover created the fresco ceiling, the Jean Cocteau room came into being, and Coco designed the garden.

Visible Nordic heritage
When Regan decided to modernise the apartment by decorating it with contemporary furniture, objects and accessories, there was no doubt in her mind as to who would be the ideal choice. She invited &Tradition to add their touch to this truly legendary apartment.

- I have been following &Tradition over the past few years and have always been impressed with their collections, says Regan.

- The style is fresh, yet based on a strong and visible Nordic heritage in terms of design and high quality. When I was looking for a partner for this location, &Tradition was the obvious choice. I was sure that their lush, contemporary style would work within the Coco space.

Grandeur and splendour
The history of the apartment was an important element and inspiration for &Tradition designer Signe Hytte, who furnished the &Tradition room.

- When you enter the Coco Chanel apartment, you are instantly struck by a feeling of grandeur and splendour, says Hytte.

- It was paramount for me that the furniture we chose could and should fit the apartment’s impressive legacy.

Previously, the &tradition room was the dining room, as there is a secret passageway to the kitchen. It has since been transformed into a petit salon.

- It is one of our cosiest spaces where everyone feels the most relaxed and at home, adds Regan.

- The indirect light on the original antique wood panelling is perfectly paired with &tradition’s style and colour palette.

Most iconic and classic pieces
In addition to the room’s dark wooden panels with its neat, meticulous cut-outs, the marble fireplace and the brass elements are just some of the signature materials used by &Tradition, making the curated pieces from their collection a perfect match.

- I chose some of the classic and most iconic pieces from the &Tradition collection in the finest, most exclusive, rich materials and colours, such as the Mayor sofa by Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen, explains Hytte.

At the same time, Hytte wanted the essence of &Tradition to stand out and be
seen in a contemporary context – hence the central placement of the Palette
table by Jaime Hayon, which is more experimental in appearance, as well as
the Fly chair by Space Copenhagen in a golden, yellow velvet. Both bringing a
luxurious, playful yet timeless look to the interior and atmosphere.

The Private Coco Apartment
The apartment is comprised of two floors, one noble 1st floor of 340m2 and a 170m2 entresol, traditionally for the house staff.

The 1st floor has four vast reception rooms all flowing off the main mirrored hallway with a historically classed ceiling fresque painted by José-Maria Sert in the 1930’s. All drawing rooms lead to another and you can imagine the parties in the 1920’s and 1930’s in the very spot that you walk in.

There is only one bedroom but several dressing rooms, and a double kitchen for staff. The entresol is now a maze leading you to Jean Cocteau’s guest quarters with Versailles parquet and tapestried walls, a long pink hallway and office with peacock carpet and the original laundry room where linens and clothes were hand washed and hung to dry.

MR Agency is dedicated to contemporary creation in the fields of fashion, design and contemporary art. The agency proposes project coordination and the organization of exhibitions.
