Carl Hansen & Son opens flagship store in San Francisco

Carl Hansen & Son continues to advance its strategy of international expansion with the opening of a new Flagship Store in San Francisco

Carl Hansen & Son is opening of a new Flagship Store in San Francisco’s Design District. Following the success of the showroom expansion in New York’s Flatiron District, the new location in San Francisco celebrates the brand’s expansion into both the contract and retail markets. The new West Coast location provides a dedicated space to showcase a comprehensive representation of the brand’s portfolio of modern Danish design classics.

As another step toward fulfilling an ongoing strategy of international expansion, the opening of the Flagship Store in San Francisco comes on the heels of a new Flagship Store recently opened in Stockholm, Sweden. Carl Hansen & Son is cementing a strong foothold in major US markets, establishing bi-coastal flagship stores to support a growing portfolio of classic furniture from the Golden Age of Danish Design, as well as new pieces by celebrated contemporary architects and furniture designers.

CEO Knud Erik Hansen, the third generation of the Hansen family, says:

- San Francisco has long represented an intersection of international ideas and values, and combined with the city’s reputation as a design destination, provides an ideal backdrop for our first ground level retail location in the US. Our exceptional furniture is rooted in a tradition of collaboration with pioneering designers, and that philosophy finds excellent synergy in San Francisco.

With a forward-looking approach, the 2,052 square-foot San Francisco Flagship Store, formerly located in Culver City’s Helms Bakery, builds on the loft-like spirit of Carl Hansen & Søn’s New York counterpart, offering an immersive environment that encourages one-on-one connection with its Danish design classics.

Informed by the mid-century aesthetic characteristic of the Pacific Northwest, the new flagship store features an intimate setting inspired by natural materials and welcoming lighting, complete with furniture in a material palette ranging from white oiled oak to walnut, and colour notes of soft pink and moss green. A kitchen featuring a custom island crafted from Mogens Koch bookcases offers a coffee bar and lounge area for customers to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Energised by the West Coast light and native woodlands, the flagship store’s emphasis on natural materials creates harmony between the Danish minimal and California modern aesthetics.

The new Flagship Store hosts two main exhibition spaces spanning the entire Golden Age of Danish Design. The street-facing main salon showcases classic icons from Hans J. Wegner, Ole Wanscher, Mogens Koch, Poul Kjærholm, and Frits Henningsen, in addition to contemporary masterpieces from internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Tadao Ando and Austrian design trio EOOS, together with Danish visionaries Anker Bak and Naja Utzon Popov.

A second gallery pays homage to the brand’s heritage and dedication to traditional Danish craftsmanship, showcasing pieces such as Denmark’s first modern design classic, the Faaborg Chair, designed in 1914 by Kaare Klint. Bridging the two worlds together is a library built of custom Mogens Koch bookcases, inviting clients to completely immerse themselves in the Carl Hansen & Son universe, and find inspiration from both the brand’s compelling history and continued evolution.

- The new flagship store has been thoughtfully framed to serve as an inspirational and memorable resource for myriad stakeholders in the realm of design - to cater to the unique needs of a contract professional’s specifications, as well as the private customer’s process of discovery, explains CEO Knud Erik Hansen.

- We look forward to sharing our beautiful new space with architects, designers, and private customers alike.

Carl Hansen & Søn’s Flagship Store in San Francisco will open March 2018.
